How Can Self-Watering Plants Help You Start a Mini Garden

Starting a mini garden can be challenging for some people. They think it's hard, you need to have special knowledge and a lot of time on your hands. While this is true in some cases, with modern patterns, you won't have these issues. They're a very practical way to start your mini garden without getting overwhelmed.

Gardening is a well-liked hobby in Australia. People here take good care of their gardens and are very mindful of the gardening process. They want to grow their own produce in an eco-friendly, toxic-free environment. Without using any pesticides and herbicides, they’re making much healthier fruits, veggies and herbs. Do you believe that starting your own garden requires a large backyard? Well, that's not the case.

Nowadays, we have eco-friendly and sustainable white self-watering planters. They’re a fresh and creative way of growing produce while making the most of the space you have available in any house or even a tiny apartment. These containers are growing in popularity every day due to their practicality, sustainability, sustainable design, and space-saving properties.

These boxes are made of 2 components. The first one holds the soil and the plant. The second one is the reservoir where the water is stored. It stays there until the plant is ready to take some of it. A structure like this doesn’t allow the plant to dry out. It keeps the water within reach. It also stores all of the essential nutrients your plants need.

All of the healthy nutrients won’t leak out like they’ll most likely do in regular pots. This keeps your fruits, veggies and herbs happy and healthy at all times. Your plants won't rot or dry out from too much or too little watering, even if you leave your home for several days at a time. In this age of global warming, this is a fantastic gardening option and the ideal answer for individuals with hectic schedules.

Another wonderful advantage is that the container at the bottom promotes root development and growth. The roots need to grow in size in order to reach the water, which makes them stronger and tougher. If you want to save some space in your small house, apartment or yard and you still want your mini garden to be there, you can buy these containers and leave them on the floor or hang them on a wall. Some designs are even stackable. With a simple and elegant design, they won’t be just practical but also aesthetically pleasing.

Produce: Best Veggies to Grow

Consuming the vegetables you have cultivated in your garden is a wonderful and fulfilling experience. You'll be really satisfied and happy to have grown something on your own. There are so many veggie options you can grow in your mini garden. The first thing to do is buy the seeds. They're not a big investment and need some time to grow.

Start by buying only a few seeds. This way you won’t get overwhelmed if this is your first time tending a garden. Get some seeds, a good amount of high-quality soil, water, sunlight, a bit of patience and some time to prepare for the task. Considering most veggies require a lot of moisture, these planters are perfect for the task.

Garlic is a veggie that’s very simple to grow. It doesn’t need any special care. Just make sure you plant them 10 cm apart so they can grow and develop properly. In order to get fresh garlic in the spring and summer, plant it in autumn. With a fresh clove of garlic, every meal will be an absolute delight and will have a burst of flavour.

Tomatoes are also suitable to be grown in white self-watering planters. They're a must-have in every kitchen, don’t need a lot of space to grow and need plenty of water to thrive. That's why these boxes are suitable for tomatoes. Cucumbers and tomatoes go very well together. They make an amazing salad. Cucumbers are easy to grow and can be harvested throughout the year.

Carrots are also a good option. Just keep in mind that they need shade to grow. The container will keep the soil and roots moist and cold and provide a great growth environment. If you like zucchini you can plant them as well. They don’t need a lot of attention and are very delicious.

Kale is another nutrient-dense, nourishing plant that you can grow in your pots. Plant it in early July if you are located in a northern Australian region. The best time of year to plant kale if you live in a warmer climate is in the autumn. If you love spinach, plant it. Keep in mind that the pot should be at least 12 cm deep so the spinach can grow comfortably.

Potential Soil Problems & Solutions

Even if you’re growing your veggies in modern planters, there’s still a chance they’ll get damaged by pests. It doesn’t matter if you’re using the planters indoors or outdoors, these problems can occur. In some cases, the surface can develop mould. This is a fungus that thrives in humid climates and environments. It's not that damaging to the plants but humans can develop allergies and have breathing difficulties.

However, this is a problem you can easily fix. Just scoop out the mould and sprinkle some cinnamon on the affected soil. Cinnamon has the power to kill fungus and prevent it from resurfacing. Sometimes, insects can also be an issue. The worst of them all are fruit flies. They're harmful for both the plants and humans.

They often appear when the soil is very wet. This is a comfortable space for them to be and lay their eggs. They need damp soil to thrive and grow. If you notice them early, you can drive them away by simply drying the soil. If you don’t notice them on time, you should make a gnat trap. These are just some of the ways you can deal with fruit flies.
